Négritude and the Poetics of Sociological Imagination
The group will explore the interdisciplinary richness of Négritude—from the foundational poetry and political thought of Aimé Césaire and his circle, through the revolutionary humanism of Frantz Fanon and the double-consciousness framework of W. E. B. Du Bois, to modern rearticulations in the work of early 20th-century writers like Richard Wright and 21st-century scholars like Saidiya Hartman. Our aim is to expand the theoretical and formal scope of sociology by immersing ourselves in the conceptual, poetic, and aesthetic innovations of Négritude and its intellectual descendants. Please contact Fiona Greenland (fg5t@virginia.edu) or B. Brian Foster (dcu9kv@virginia.edu) if you are interested in participating.
