Mission & History

Institute for the Arts and Humanities (IAH) formally known as Institute for the Humanities and Global Cultures (IHGC)  is the University of Virginia's center for humanities research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Founded in 2011, our mission is to advance humanistic research and inquiry across the disciplines through innovative programming, institutional collaborations, and faculty-led initiatives. With the guidance of our advisory board, we sponsor a competitive fellowship program that embeds faculty in the life of the institution, ongoing humanities laboratories and working groups that explore focused topics, and partnerships with internal centers and external institutions. We also support the Emerging Initiatives for the College of Arts and Sciences, which is an incubation space for non-departmental initiatives.

IAH is an inclusive space that celebrates the humanities as the source of deep and sustaining knowledge. As the humanities center of a public university, we welcome all members of the UVA community, and the broader community in and beyond Charlottesville, to join us for lectures, seminars, and workshops that we host each semester.
